The area covered by the intervention, the area of the Barceló Market, its surrounding areas of Santa Bárbara and Alonso Martínez, incorporates a significant degree of complexity that must be taken into account in any action undertaken.

The presence of buildings, constituted as historic milestones, gives the area character, significant strength and a level of differentiation from the surrounding sectors.

The restructuring of the Barceló and Santa Bárbara sectors must take into account the collective memory inherent to the place, the activities that take place within it and the sustainable qualities that must be incorporated into the planning strategy for any modern city.

The aim of this action is to link the sectors corresponding to the sphere of action and their unique buildings, taking account of the specific characteristics and functions of each building and sub-sector.

For this reason, the design concept has been developed as a systematic, unitary and comprehensive response that shapes a whole, including buildings, roads, paths and spaces with their specific respective uses and different degrees of significance.

With this objective in mind, a large facility has been created that houses all the functions of the programme, the new market, the sports hall, the infants’ school and the residential building. At the same time, an itinerary has been sought that will link all the sectors, through a simple and clear layout, incorporating traditional urban events as well as natural and technological processes that can be interpreted as values and simultaneously be erected as decisive elements in the urban form.
